The decision has not been made lightly; the situation surrounding the film is nuanced, and we believe in education, redemption, and growth from mistakes. However, it has become clear to us that the inclusion of Thomasina Pidgeon in the film, without any provision of context on her involvement in the case of Charles Barrett, has been upsetting and hurtful to many members of the climbing community, especially those who have experience of sexual assault. Our decision is grounded in our commitment to ensuring that the wall remains a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for everyone.
We encourage anyone who is still interested in viewing the films to do so and for you to make this choice independently. Alongside other screenings in London, the films should be available via the Reel Rock website after the World Tour.
On our part, this situation - as well as its timing on International Women’s Day - has encouraged us to reflect on the inclusion and representation of women in climbing media more generally. One thing it has highlighted is that we want to explore more opportunities to amplify a broader range of climber's stories. We are seeking recommendations of film makers or films, particularly about independent London-based film makers and climbers. If our community has any suggestions, please reach out!
If you have any questions or concerns or want to talk to us about our decision, please speak to us. You can contact our Marketing and Events Manager, Amy, by emailing amy@mileendwall.org.uk.
