The National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme was started in 2008 by the ABC Training Trust and is a UK-wide scheme designed to promote climbing development for youth. Focussed on artificial climbing structures, NICAS is a 5-step syllabus to accredit individual climbing achievement for all candidates aged 8 and upwards.
Mile End Climbing Wall is one of the scheme’s founder ambassadors of best practice, operating as a hub Primary Centre able to deliver all 5 levels of the scheme from novice to Advanced climber status. The aims of the scheme are to improve levels of ability, learn climbing rope-work, appropriate equipment use, learn to communicate and work as a team, record personal achievement and to point the way to further disciplines and challenges beyond the scope of the scheme. At entry level the scheme is accessible to all candidates, recognising their ability to climb safely under supervision. Some graduates and candidates at the higher levels represent Great Britain on the GB Junior Climbing Team.
The five NICAS levels are: New Climber, Foundation climber, Technical Climber, Lead Climber and Advanced Climber. Candidates record their achievement by means of completing their personal log-book, with certificates awarded on successful completion of each level. NICAS can be used with the GCSE syllabus for PE: Adventurous Activities as well as allowing individual candidates to improve their climbing as a hobby or within a squad.
The ABCTT uses NICAS as a platform to invest in climbing from grass-roots to elite levels of the sport, working with individual candidates as well as offering skills training to instructors, climbing wall managers and technical advisors.
Mile End Climbing Wall is the only NICAS primary centre serving the East and South/East of England and has links to 25 awarding centres.
Mile End Climbing Wall offers specific NICAS classes covering all 5 levels.
Our NICAS sessions are open to any young people aged 8 or older.
